Portfolio > Titorelli

Is it possible to represent the full expansiveness of my/your being? This is a question that intrigues me as a performance artist who faces not only confinement from his own body but also from the eyes of the viewer. The philosopher Sartre describes the human gaze as being one of the most threatening forces a person can face because it is through the eyes of others that our identities are forged. As an artist, I want to speak truthfully. I have the desire to break free from my prisons (both mental and physical). I want to explode.

This desire has led to the creation of my persona Titorelli. He is video. It’s that simple. However, he is also a muse of possibility that breaks down my thought barriers, allowing me to recontextualize my space, place, and even my body in the world. Titorelli can only be seen through the eye of the camera because the camera does not have a conscious mind that limits what Titorelli is or can be. For Titorelli, the camera is a metaphor for an eye unshackled by the logical mind, an eye free to see beyond the context of the "what is." For Titorelli the camera is an object of both life and supreme liberation.
